The death of her husband set her against umuokpu, a sociocultural organization of daughters from a locality in Igbo land, who ensured that every widow observe nso ritual for any deceased husband.

Anna defiantly stuck to the directives of her fellow legionaries- not even the shocking desertion of the corpse of her fellow Christian widow under the yoke of ostracism by almost an entire Umuekwo hamlet could cow her.In the subplot, a noticeable pattern was observed in the altercation that followed when a mild kick from Father Uzo sent the cup of wine which Ekwere was about to pour as libation to the ground during Rita’s traditional marriage ceremony.

The rowdy gathering splits into three obvious groups: traditionalists who saw the outburst as sacrilegious, Christians who regarded the act of pouring libation as idol worship, and Christians who saw no wrong in observing the ritual heritage at a Christian show.Meanwhile, the main plot continued with Anna torn between not betraying the Church and horrible burden of ostracism.

She later yielded to intense pressure from umuokpu. The peace ad quietude accorded to the observance was disrupted by a dance on Christmas day. Affected families were heavily fined with threat of ostracism. The ensuing strife splits the hamlet into three groups: the traditionalists who mostly believed that the full import of Christianity was to destroy the norms of the land, Christians who saw the ritual as idolatry and should be jettisoned, and Christians who held the observance in awe as a heritage that must be preserved.

A similar pattern again was observed like other cultural tumult around.Conspicuously, Kachi, the antagonist, and fellow umuokpu engaged Helen, the protagonist, and her advocates in attrition. The burgeoning polarity sparked off horrendous and uncontrollable fires of fury in Umuokpu Umuekwo which were too hot even for the Nigeria Police Force to quench. While Achebe’s Thing Fall Apart describes among others the clash of the tenets of Christianity with the ambit of the traditional norms and values of Igbo culture during its advent in the colonial period, Jude Onyema Mba’s expository but imaginary epic prose, Litmus Test, aptly portrays the seeming twists and turns of fate of Christian religion as it still acclimatizes to Igbo culture after over a hundred years of its coming in the land and is timed in the early nineties of the 20th century.

It is a most profound fictional folklore that depicts and addresses a pattern of cultural conflict - apprehension, diatribes, combat, legal action - that has unduly persisted and sporadically undermined security in different parts of the world.
